7/12/2009: Saginaw Old Golds Remain Undefeated

The Ludington Mariners came into Ojibway Island with a 6-2 record and hopes of challenging for the rights to the Michigan Cup. But it was the Saginaw Old Golds that rang up 12 runs in the 2nd inning, after two were out, to keep the Cup on the shelf at Heck’s Bar. The final score was 31-6. John “Lumberjack” Piersall led the way, going 6 for 6 with a two doubles and a triple. Nick “Brute” Hammond, Adam “Squints” McCauley, and Ryan “Britches” Dost added 5 apiece. The season’s 1st two home runs were blasted by Rick “Slink” Spitz and Kevin “Big Wheel” Beemer. Chad “Shorty” Short, Tom “Sawdust” Tesch (4 for 4 and the game ball), and JP “Spike” Carroll added 4 hits each. Beemer, Daig, Mahan, Paul Curry (3 for 3), Patrick Curry, and John Ruple knocked out 3 hits each. Defensively Paul “Preacher” Curry at 1st and Richard “Professor” Curry catching turned in good games. Beemer and Chuck “Ducky” Mahan again did a great job on the mound. Tammy Daig in her period piece pink dress opened with the National Anthem. Harold “The Lumber-Baron” Campau looked dapper as he umpired in his new and blue Riverboat Gambler vest. Again, great weather was provided for the Saginaw Old G old cranks. This game had some anxious moments. Rick “Slink” Spitz blasted the ball through the Christmas trees in the outfield and sprinted to the season’s first homerun. Rick collapsed moments later with heat exhaustion. The police and ambulance were there in 10 minutes and cleared Rick for his chicken dinner at Heck’s Bar. Rick’s big complaint was the fact that he missed 4 at bats. Another memorable moment of the day was when Nick “The Brute Hammond” ripped a line drive to left field that broke the fielder’s hand. The Mariners player, who had qualified for the Buick Open, finished the game. The ambidextrous young man batted left and right handed and finished the game. This is the height of insanity of Vintage Base ball that I have witnessed to date. Saginaw is 5-0-1 for the season for a two year total of 20-5-1.
