Game: Friday, 7/17/2009: Saginaw Old Gold Golds Rain in another Win

Saginaw was challenged for the Michigan Cup for the 4th straight game and came away with a close win at Midland. The Old Golds trailed by a score of 3-0 after four innings. The weather moved in at the top of 5th and the skies opened up with a pouring rain that lasted the entire at bat for the road team. When the storm concluded, Saginaw found itself a head of the ‘Mighty River Hogs 4-3. Harold “Lumber-Baron” Campau commented, “It must have been the Old Gold God’s of Billy (“Gunner”) McGunnigle and John (Gibson) Clarkson Saginaw went on to win 5-4. The undefeated Golds were led by Rick “Slink” Spitz who went 3 for 3. “Ducky” Mahan and “Big Wheel” Beemer again provided the one two punch on the mound. “Lumberjack” Piersall ripped a double while going 2 for 3. Hammond, McCauley, Ruple, and “Spike” Carroll added 2 hits apiece. Two defensive plays highlighted the evening: Chris “Rooster” Rousseau took off like a shot from his 1st base position, as he bobbed and weaved himself down the uneven grounds to haul in ball down the right field line. Brandon “Baby Bull” Diag, Saginaw’s rock solid 2nd baseman, caught the game ending ball while laying flat on his back. That play also earned Brandon the game ball.
