Game 9: 7/19/2009: Saginaw Sinks Ludington “Mariners” 14-2

The Saginaw “Old Golds” traveled to the west side of the state for the 1st time to play the Ludington “Mariners” at the Historic White Pine Village. The ball field had a tree located in centerfield and one inside the right field line. Saginaw had to play by a variety of rules they hadn’t seen before, and played against a very good ball club. The Old Golds brought their bats to life and played awesome defensive to win going away 14 to 2. “Ducky” Mahan and “Big Wheel” Beemer get better on the mound every game, this was no exception as they pitched shutout ball for the 1st 8 innings. John “Lumberjack” Piersall made a great running catch in centerfield and added a triple as he went 3 for 4. Two hits each were added by Hammond, McCauley, Dost, Beemer, Diag, Ruple, and Short. Saginaw totaled 5 doubles for the sunny Sunday afternoon: McCauley, Dost, Ruple, Short, and a historic double by Tom “Crazy Legs” Tesch. “Professor” Curry finally hit a ball out of the infield as he went 1 for 3. The finest double play to date was handled by “Scoops” Larkin to “Squints” McCauley, who fired over to Patrick “Hurricane” Curry. Patrick caught everything to come his way at 1st all day. The win was the teams 5th successful defense of the Michigan Cup and moved their yearly count to 7-0-1 and a team two year total of 22-5-1.
