SAGINAW ‘OLD GOLDS’ PLAYED @ LATHRUP PARK 5/23/2010
The Saginaw ‘Old Golds’ fresh from four games in Cooperstown, New York took on two of the states finest vintage baseball teams at Lathrup Park on Sunday, May 23rd. Game one saw Saginaw drop a 7-5 decision and lose the Michigan Cup (after successfully defending it for the last year and a half) to Detroit. The ‘Golds’ committed too many errors in one inning and allowed 5 runs, they couldn’t make up. ‘Squints’ McCauley and Ducky Mahan both went 3 for 3. ‘Rooster’ Rousseau and ‘Scoops’ Larkin made 3 putouts each. Richard ‘Professor’ Curry, “The last inning was something with the ‘Golds’, making 3 putouts after the bases were loaded”. Game two went Saginaw’s way beating the Bay City Independents for the fourth straight time (over the last two years) 8 to 6. ‘Brute’ Hammond led the way with 3 hits, including a double. Two hits each were totaled by ‘Britches’ Dost (he also left with a very big middle finger-playing 1st base-now known as the ‘Slink’ Spitz injury), ‘Hustler’ Guerra, ‘Rooster’, and ‘Baby Bull’ Diag. Sonny Guerra made numerous spectacular catches in both games in left, hauling down 8 for the day (the one in foul territory was unbelievable). The Bay City 3rd baseman was knocked to his knees, after taking a line drive to the chest-an inning later he got drilled again in the arm. Rookie Nate ‘Mad Hatter’ Hall got his 1st hit and scored a run. ‘Professor’: “I played ball at Lathrup as a kid and to see it come to life for baseball again was inspiring”. “On the drive home, I saw five kids playing ball in the front yard-we will be back”.
