Parade Day in Royal Oak (5/31/2010)

Who has more fun then the Saginaw ‘Old Golds’- Royal Oak on a sunny Monday for a Memorial Day Parade. This is the third parade by Saginaw’s Bingo Long and its Traveling All-Stars (7 games in 2 ½ weeks). Instead of preceding a Camel we walked behind a Calliope. The crowds were four deep and they loved seeing the black, white, and gold of Saginaw’s finest. After the parade we watched War vets talk about their fallen friends and how proud they were of America. I do believe there were a few tears amongst the tough gentleman of the ‘Golds’. After a pancake breakfast, I found myself redoing the parade route with Paulette in 93 degree heat-walking back to our car, as ‘Sawdust’ drove by on the way to the park-without picking us up (Thanks-Son-in-Law-but the van was full). I knew something was up at the Wahoo Ball Park, when the spectator area was cut and the infield was a two/three feet high with un-mowed grass. Nick “Brute” Hammond kept up his insane hitting with three more (the boys hitting .900 something-maybe we should all buy are own bats). “Shorty” Short and “Baby Bull” Daig made some spectacular plays in the infield. But the screw-ups returned, we made more errors then Julie Andrews- taking umbrella flights in ‘Mary Poppins’. After falling behind 6 to zip, Saginaw scored four times in the last two innings and but came up short. Kevin “Big Wheel” Beemer got drilled with a line shot, and the “Professor” tried catching a “Scoops” Larkin throw to the plate-that left his hand looking like something in “Nightmare on Elm Street.” Richard and Paulette visited an Irish Pub in Royal Oak for few too many red-wines. So as to not drive home loopy-they went to the only available movie-“Sex in the City.” I was among 300 women and two gay guys to watch this dribble. After a two hour drive back home in wind driven rains, we made it back to one of the best damn hockey games I’ve ever seen: Chicago 2-Flyers 1. “Lumberjacks” Flyers can still win this thing. Next game: the Ft. Wayne Early Risers (they better be-they have a five hour drive)-playing the ‘Golds’ @ Ojibway, Sunday June 6th @ 1:00. “Shorty”s Christina will be singing the National Anthem. Pull up a chair for Saginaw’s best free entertainment.
