6/28/09: Saginaw Old Gold’s Retain Michigan Cup
The Greenfield LAH-DE-DAHS said it was the best played game at the Village this season, and the Old Gold’s agreed. For the second time (and 2nd Cup Challenge), between vintage baseball’s finest, Saginaw came from behind with 4 runs in the ninth to win 14 to 13. Rookie Chad “Shorty” Short, from the Gold’s minor league squad, Saginaw Stars, led the way with 5 hits and played a solid third base. Adam “Squints” McCauley, John “Lumberjack” Piersall, and Toby “Scoops” Larkin pounded out 4 each. Ryan “Britches” Dost, Kevin “Big Wheel” Beemer, Brandon “Baby Bull” Daig added 3 hits. The defensive play of the day was made by Nick “Brute” Hammond who sprinted to the ball in leftfield, dove, reached, and caught the ball with the bases loaded. Paul “Preacher” Curry caught three line shots in front of the railroad tracks in right field. McCauley made a great diving catch behind home plate. Chuck “Ducky” Mahan and Kevin “Big Wheel” Beemer again starred on the mound. “Ducky” blew a hamstring legging out a single and Beemer finished in fine fashion, shutting out Greenfield in the final frame. The weather was awesome, the hillside full of “Cranks”, and the band played throughout the game. Baseball in 1883 couldn’t have been any better than this. Today’s game was a complete team effort, with everyone contributing. John “Lumberjack” Piersall was given the Game Ball by the “Professor” for his big hits in the 4 run 7th and 9th innings. The LA-DE-DAHS to date are the finest gentleman the “Gold’s” have had a chance to compete against. Saginaw is now 4-0-1 for two year record of 19-5-1. NEXT GAME: AT OJIBWAY ISLAND vs. LUDINGTON @ 2:00 7/12/2009.
