Bad News ‘Golds
The Lah-De-Dahs of Greenfield Village brought the shock troops for a game with
the
Saginaw ‘Old Golds’ on a warm Sunday afternoon, July11th, 2010.
35 of Detroit’s
players signed up for a shot at last years World Champions from Saginaw. The
14 that
played for Detroit included ‘Pirate’ a pitcher that drives you nuts
waiting for one good
one to come over the plate. The first three in the Lah-De-Dah’s batting
line-up were all
wafer thin characters who ran like Usain Bolt. The three had a hearty breakfast
before the
game of one cheerio each. The next three hit like Ruth, Gehrig, and Miguel Cabrera.
They were banging balls off the centerfield cordon of bricks, lined with American
flags,
booming them through and over trees, and smashing oblong baseballs off and over
the
railroad tracks. Everything hit into the outfield by the ‘Golds’
was reminiscent of balls
being hauled in by Austin Jackson & Curtis Granderson. The centerfielder
for the
Greenfield team caught one going up a hill full speed, turning, and making a
back handed
grab, it was ridiculous. This all resulted with Detroit taking a 10-1 lead and
holding off
the ‘Golds’ 25-14 (Good News: Detroit only outscored the ‘Golds’
15 to 13 in the last 6
innings). Spain scored a goal after nearly a day to win the Soccer World Championship
1
to zip, the two teams at Greenfield Village racked up 39 runs in front of fans
lining the
hill side at the historic Greenfield ball ground. The Lah-De-Dahs passion for
this game
and their combined athletic ability allowed them to keep the Michigan Cup for
a few
more months. Nobody is going to beat this bunch but Saginaw, and they will have
to
bring their best effort and players to make that happen. A few highlights for
the “Golds’
included Chad “Shorty” Short catching most everything that went
his way in leftfield (6
Put Outs). After a day of chasing baseballs in right-field, it looked the Big
Fella-
Nate “Bull Frog” formally, the “Mad Hatter” Hall was
going to completely burst out of
his uniform, shades of “Bull Dog” Daig. Ryan “Britches”
Dost smacked out six hits
and “Bull Dog” Daig snuck in 4 more. “Scoops” Larkin
and “Lumberjack” Piersall
added 3 each. Three of the eleven ‘Golds’ played hurt: Spitz (Back),
Beemer (leg), and
Mahan (finger), & our beloved Tally Girl Heidi Ho had a sun stroke. One
thing
the “Golds” did very well was raising their hats every time the
Village train chugged by
spewing black smoke. The day before four ‘Gold’ players played in
a game at Midland.
“Ducky” suited up for the “River Hogs” and Nate, Richard,
and Nick played for the
Hartwick Pines Swampers. Mahan had three hits and picked up a busted finger
catching a
foul ball off the mound. Nate “The Bammer” Hall ripped three long
balls for hits (one off
the centerfield electrical boxs), Nick had two, and Richard one (it could have
been two
but he was thrown out from the outfield again). The “Professor”
had a running catch for a
putout. Midland’s venerable, short and very old second/baseman, came by
to say, “When
I grow up I want to be just like you”. This same old dude was 3 for 4
with two doubles-
using his famous silver painted bat. Midland won 14 to 12. That game was a lot
of fun.
The Saginaw “Old Golds’ now stand 8 and 7 after 15 games. Next up
is Midland playing
in Saginaw: July 30th @ 6:30 PM @ Ojibway Island.
