7/30/2010: ‘Old Golds’ Entertain @ Ojibway
The Saginaw ‘Old Golds’ five run outburst in the 4th inning carried them to a hard fought
8-3 win over the ‘Mighty River Hogs’ of Midland at Ojibway Island Friday evening. It
was the team’s third home game of the season and it brought their record to 9 and 7. The
crowd was the best of the year, with the help from the residents of Mc Bright Manor.
Brandon “Bull Dog” Daig led the way with three hits, a smash to deep center for a triple
and he survived another collision at 2nd base, trying to steal. Chad “Shorty” Short went 3
for 3 and played an excellent leftfield. The ‘Golds’ defense was outstanding.
Nick “Brute” Hammond who made three putouts had the play of the day after picking up
a line smash at third and firing a laser over to Rick “Slink” Spitz to just nip the runner at
first. Rick will be moving to Gaylord next season to work for Conway Trucking and a
25% raise. Ryan “Britches” Dost pitched five innings, had two hits, and made an
outstanding running catch while playing 1st base. The man not only looks like Babe Ruth,
he plays like the Big Fella. Adam “Squints” McCauley again played great at short. A
Midland player commented, “Don’t hit to that man.” Speaking of not hitting to someone-
Midland’s leftfielder caught everything in left but a cold. The catchers Nate “Bull Frog”
Hall & Richard “Professor” Curry had two putouts each. Richard also picked up a hit,
added an RBI, and had an injury when he pinched his finger setting up lawn chairs for the
Mc Bright folks. Chris “Rooster” Rousseau was released by Somalia Pirates just in time
to make the game. He had two hits and played excellent in the outfield. Sonny “The
Hustler” Guerra, newly painted into the team mural on the Hamilton Street Barber Shop
is now on a milk carton, replacing the “Rooster”. Kevin “Big Wheel” Beemer had two
hits and pitched another good game, splitting with “Britches” “Ducky” Mahan missed his
1st game in three years because of work. We missed him. Julia and Micah Curry debuted
their new “Golds” dresses and Warren “I never miss an ‘Old Gold’ game” Martin was
seen sitting with a lady friend at the ball park. It is truly an honor to have a 10 ten yearpro
pitcher that played for the Saginaw Aces/Bears/Jack Rabbits & a true WWII hero
supporting our team. The Saginaw News should do a story on this wonderful man. Heidi
was back at the scoring table after some medical issues, with medication and good diet
she will be just fine. Don “Gramps” Deford was there. Good News: he is cancer free.
Harold Campau was back after his hip surgery-he looked healthy. After the game the
players lined up to salute each other and the fans. The “Professor” noticed two girls he
dated at Arthur Hill among the Mc Bright girls. All kidding aside the folks from Mc
Bright had a wonderful time. The “Professor” gave the game ball to lady in a wheel
chair. Richard, “Her smile was priceless.” One was heard to say, “I love this.” Richard
now has his own “Groupies”. The “Golds’ signed autographs, were hugged, and left with
a sincere feeling of gratification that comes from kindness. As the players prepared to
party at Heck’s Bar, Richard had to fend off people trying to put him on to the Mc Bright
bus. Well the “Professor” made it to bar and found himself in a dance off with a guy in a
cut off muscle shirt, for 10 minutes. Paulette “Mrs. Professor” sang the “Rose” and had
to chase off an admirer (70 year old man with a beard). “Squints” offered Paulette a
wardrobe change while Paulette was singing. The characters of Heck’s Bar and
the “Golds” make for an interesting Friday night mix.
