9/12/2009: Saginaw ‘Old Golds’ Close out Regular Season

The Saginaw ‘Old Golds’ behind the slugging of Sonny Guerra, Toby Larkin, and Brandon Diag with 4-hits each, and “Big Wheel Beemer’s shutout pitching beat the ‘Mighty River Hogs’ of Midland 11-0 at Ojibway on another sunny Saturday afternoon. Piersall, Beemer, and Ruple (one triple) added 3-hits a piece. Beemer’s defense, behind him held up all day. Sonny “The Hustler” Guerra, made a phenomenal running catch into foul territory. Toby Larkin caught everything at short. A relay throw from Guerra to Larkin to “Brute” Hammond prevented a triple by a step. Rick “Slink” Spitz preserved the shutout with a stab at 1st base of a line shot to create a double play of his own with the bases loaded, to end the game. A rare happening occurred when Richard “Professor” Curry rambled past home plate for a run to ring the bell, without dropping over from a heart attack. “Slink” Spitz had a look of disbelief, similar to his expression, witnessing Richard score against Larry’s Lounge in hockey 30 years earlier. Melody Curry sang the National Anthem beautifully, the Heritage Pom-Pon team worked the concession stand, Don “Gramps’ Deford (80 year-old star pitcher from last year’s team) threw out the opening pitch, and Kevin Beemer was given the game ball. Mi Gente’s cover boy Sonny Guerra finished the day sighing autographs for the love struck Heritage girls. Saginaw closed out the regular season with a 13-1-1 record and three titles. The “Golds” play again in Bay City, as the number one seed (Saginaw defended the Michigan Cup successfully 5-times this year) at the Middle grounds in a seven team State of Michigan Tournament on Saturday 9/26/2009.
