“Old Golds Fall Short”

The Saginaw Old Golds Vintage Base Ball club won three consecutive matches to advance to the championship game of the Sixth Annual World Tournament of Historic Baseball on Sunday in Greenfield Village.  But the Old Golds’ bid for a world title came up short in an 11-7 decision to the defending champion LahDeeDahs.  The Old Golds opened the tournament with a 17-16 victory over the Clodbusters from Centerline, Ohio.  Dennis Konusewski and Ryan Dost led the way with four hits.  Konusewski also had four RBIs.  John Piersall and Nick Hammond each collected three hits.  Up next for the Old Golds was a familiar foe, the Bay City Independents.  The two teams split a pair of matches during the season.  Saginaw and Bay City played eight innings (the tourney used a seven–inning format) to determine the winner, with the Old Golds prevailing 7-6.  Adam McCauley doubled.  Piersall singled, and Konusewski doubled to provide the margin of victory.  The Old Golds took on the Columbus Capitals and rolled to a 23-3 victory.  Piersall had four hits, while Nick Hammond, McCauley, Chris Holley, Brandon Daig, Ryan Dost and Rick Spitz each had three hits.  Saginaw’s record stands at 7-3.  The Old Golds play again at 1 p.m. Sunday against the Grand Blanc Thrashers at Grand Blanc High School.
