Saturday/Sunday August 2 & 3, 2008 WORLD TOURNAMENT
(From ClodBuster Base Ball Club Website)
The Coldbuster Base Ball Club journeyed to Dearborn, Michigan, in hopes of again capturing the World Tournament of Historic Baseball championship. Twelve Clodbusters made the journey, some faster than other, and for once, beautiful and dry weather welcomed the clubs to Michigan. However, the draw was unkind to the Dayton club. The boys were pitted against the new Saginaw Old Golds in the first round and the Columbus Capitals, Indianapolis Hoosiers and Bay City Independents all appeared in that half of the bracket. The Saginaw players may have worn gold stockings, but they were anything but OLD. One thing was for certain, they did know how to play. They could hit AND field. If they were previously a collection of modern ballists or softballers, they acclimated to the vintage game rather quickly. The Old Golds were able to place many well struck balls into the brush and over the railroad for groundrule doubles. On one particular play, Mr. Treon was tending the first base when one of the Gold stepped on his foot and sliced open his cleat – not to mention his picky toe. (Mr. Treon we wish you a speedy recovery.) Mule Willis was again struck on another sharp come-backer, this time in the arm; it was the hurler’s second such strike of the summer. After the first, the Clodbusters held a slim 5-4 advantage. The lead transferred back and forth several time. The Dayton nine mounted a last inning comeback, beginning with Sawdust’s RBI fair-foul with two hand down. With just three aces in the final inning, the Ohians fell short in seven: Saginaw 17, Clodbusters 14. The outcome would likely have been different had two Clodbusters not been narrowly thrown at the dish.
