“Old Gold Share 1865 title in 2008”

The Saginaw Old Golds Vintage Base Ball Club came away with a share of the 1865 state championships during a re-inactment of the tournament last Saturday at the Bay City Middlegrounds.  The Old Golds, La De Dahs of Greenfield Village and the Bay City Independents each won two of three games in the day-long tournament.  The Saginaw Stars, made up of seven Old Golds players and five new players, went 0-4.  The club allowing the fewest runs in the tournament determined the tiebreaker.  The Old Gold and La De Dahs each gave up 20 runs, while the Independents yielded 24, so the Old Golds and La De Dahs share the state tourney trophy.  The Old Golds defeated the Stars 21-2 behind four hits from Chris Holly and John Piersall and three hits from Kevin Beemer and Dennis Konusewski.  Later, they defeated the Independents 16-7 as Nick Hammond, Konusewski and Holly each had three hits.  The Old Golds’ lone loss was 11-9 to the La De Dahs in their first game.  They finish the season with a 13-5 record.  The Stars also lost 17-3 to Bay City and 17-3 to the La De Dahs.  Joe Flutey had four hits in the tournament for the Stars.
